New contribution of France to a project in food security and nutrition.
On 29 August 2013, Mr Patrice Leroy, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the French Embassy in South Sudan, and Mr Sirak Mehari Weldemicael, Country Director in South Sudan of the NGO Action Against Hunger (ACF), signed a grant agreement for a project on nutrition and food security to be implemented in Gogrial West County (Warrap State).
The project will start in September and will last seven months. It aims at reducing the number of cases of malnutrition in Gogrial West County. 14 700 people will benefit from this programme which addresses both the causes and effects of malnutrition. An integrated targeted supplementary feeding programme will be implemented together with activities to support vegetable production and income-generating activities.
With a grant of 250 000 Euros (i.e. more than 333 330 US dollars), the French government’s contribution to this project demonstrates France’s support for food security and the fight against malnutrition in South Sudan. In a country affected by chronic food insecurity and with alarming rate of acute malnutrition, reinforcing people’s capacity to rapidly recover from shocks, is paramount to finding a way out of spiralling humanitarian crises.
This new contribution continues the cooperation of the French government with ACF. The French government financed twice, in 2009 and 2010, the activities of the NGO in the States of Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal.
