South Sudan – Recruitment of child soldiers by warring parties (February 16, 2015)

France condemns the recruitment and use of children by the parties to the conflict in South Sudan, despite repeated commitments to put an end to these serious human rights violations. According to UNICEF, 12,000 children were reportedly forced to participate in the conflict in 2014.

France would like the conclusions and recommendations of the African Union Commission of Inquiry on human rights violations in South Sudan to be published in order to advance the fight against impunity and the reconciliation process.

France is determined to protect children in armed conflicts and calls for the universal ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Protocol on this issue. We would like all states that have not yet done so to endorse the “Principles and Commitments to protect children from recruitment by armed groups” adopted at the Paris Conference organized by France and UNICEF in 2007.
