Supporting economic empowerment of young women in Juba
On April 9, Mr Christian Bader, Ambassador of France in South Sudan, and Ms Cathy Groenendijk, Director of the local NGO Confident Children out of Conflict, signed a financing agreement for a project which will support economic empowerment of young women in Juba.
Income-generating activity for women
The grant of 7.000 Euros will help twenty destitute young women who had been previously trained in catering services by Confident Children out of Conflict to find a decent employment in the sector. The young women will be closely supported and further trained to be able to set up and manage a local restaurant by themselves. At the end of this six-month project, the restaurant should be generating sufficient income both to run the local restaurant and to enhance the young women’s self-reliance.
Decades of civil war have eroded traditional community support system, pushing an increasing number of young women into poverty and prostitution. In this context, supporting local initiatives for women’s economic empowerment is one of the priorities of the French Embassy.
French Parliamentary Fund
This funding comes from the Parliamentary Fund generously provided by Ms Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam, French Senator representing French citizens abroad, and granted with the support of Ms Régine Prato, Member of the Assembly of French Citizens Abroad, elected representative for Egypt, Sudan and South Sudan.
